German Shepherds: General Characteristics
German Shepherd dog owners love their pets for their intelligence, good looks, and great personality. This breed of dog has smooth coats and is very much strong physically. Many people appreciate this dog for being very good companions and for being very loyal and loving. If you are thinking of adopting one soon, you shouldn't have any more doubt in your mind about it because you are getting a very good dog.
German Shepherds are prone to dysplasia. This very painful disease of the joints occurs in younger Shepherds whose joints have developed abnormally or improperly. The joints do not fit well so when there is any kind of movement, pain is imminent. To know for sure if the dog is suffering from this, an x-ray is recommended. Dysplasia is not treatable but there are specific medications that the doctor can prescribe to help the dog battle extreme pain.
Bloating is another problem as well as arthritis. To protect the dog from such discomforts, the person must provide a well-balanced diet. The dog shouldn't put on extra weight so it will be easier for his joints. Regular exercises, as with humans, are necessary to maintain good health. Dogs need at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise daily.
German Shepherds that are well taken care of have a lifespan of 10 to 13 years. So, if you love your dog, feed him well and attend to his medical conditions appropriately, so you can share a lot of precious moments together for a longer time.
Good grooming is still essential. Daily brushing should maintain his shiny coat. Regular baths, tooth brushing, and nail trimming should be part of his routines too.
These dogs easily get bored so there must always be a task for them so they would feel important and useful. Train them to bring their bowl to the dining area to keep things more interesting. Playing is very important to keep him on his toes.
German Shepherds tend to become very attached to their owners. They develop loyalty and would protect their owners at all cost. The dog too, will always want to spend time with his owner - so you'll get a lot of hair on your clothes every time.
It is not very difficult to love a German Shepherd because these are very loving and committed dogs. Very well mannered, these dogs are very good guides or assistants in police and military assignments. The looks can be deceiving since they look fierce but inside they are really gentle, and playful dogs.
Soon you will be one of the happy owners of German Shepherds and you will experience their companionship. You can then assess just how much you're going to love having them around for a long time at home.
